Danish Estates: Jorgen Larsen Smooth Bent Brandy (H) (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-001-33360
Though now retired, Jorgen Larsen was a talented Danish artisan with decades of experience, crafting fine smoking instruments with great care and attention paid to all of their elements, both stylistic and functional. The technical director of both Stanwell and Kriswill at different times, his talent for carving is apparent in pieces such as this bent Brandy. Showcasing a distinctly Danish silhouette with a surprisingly angular sense of line, especially as the shank plunges into the heel, with the heel lifting swiftly at the fore, though maintaining a sense of soft curvature which informs the taper of the bowl's walls. These walls additionally contribute to a forward urge that lends the piece a bit of momentum, as the aft wall takes on a more defined taper than the fore, keeping things dynamic while opening the transition a bit and allowing for the shank to lift while leaving plenty of room to drape a digit. The shank meets a stem whose base flares toward the bit, with the saddle bit taking on a demure downturn to the button, offering a comfortable smoking posture and a bit of sleekness that balances the flare before it. Dressed in a vibrant auburn stain, this pipe showcases a wealth of swirling flame and straight grain around its bowl, while the underside is awash with swirling birdseye. Unsmoked.-John McElheny
