Danish Estates: Jorgen Larsen Smooth Acorn (G) (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe

Though now retired, Jorgen Larsen was a talented Danish artisan with decades of experience, crafting fine smoking instruments with great care and attention paid to all of their elements, both stylistic and functional. The technical director of both Stanwell and Kriswill at different times, his talent for carving is apparent in pieces such as this Acorn. The bowl of this piece immediately commands the viewer's attention, rising to over two inches tall and flaring to a high set waistline that tapers slightly to a flat rim. This bowl stands atop a firm heel that, rather than being traditionally pointed at its apex, is more continuously thick at the flanks, but extremely firm at the fore, creating an understated musculature that's tempered by the shank and stem's stature. Said shank and stem tapers gently toward the junction before the stem itself accelerates this diminution, placing further emphasis on the bowl. Dressed in a warm auburn stain, the stummel showcases a wealth of wrapping flame grain which travels around the bowl and through the flanks, with the cumberland stem adding a rich compliment to the vibrant hues of the stain.
