Danish Estates: Emil Chonowitsch Smooth Bulldog (c.1960) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-001-33418
Emil Chonowitsch was a Danish tobacconist and pipe maker whose son Jess has since become one of the most respected pipe makers in the world today. The elder Chonowitsch's pipes are beloved by collectors and are arguably rarer, with this Bulldog being a welcome sight. Many of Emil's other designs relied on plump curves and sinuous gestures, but this Bulldog represents a much bolder, more structured form: The tall bowl dominates the visual profile, and the rigid lines of the shank add firm structure, extending through the heel to reveal a pointed aspect in profile. The chamber depth is generous, yet the overall lengthy barely surpasses five inches, making for a compact piece that still provides lengthy smoking sessions — not to mention some handsome flame grain.
