Danish Estates: Tao Sandblasted Bent Brandy with Silver (E) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-001-33653
I didn't immediately recognize this piece as a Tao. Jens Nielsen doesn't often finish his pipes in a sandblast, usually opting for smooth, natural finishes. That being said, though, the Danish carver certainly knows his way around a sandblast. Concise and consistent ring grain covers the surface, providing just the right amount of texture without interrupting the shape's profile. Lithely bent and plump of bowl, this bent Brandy is a testament to Nielsen's adeptness at smooth, flowing lines. For me, the most noticeable and attractive feature (apart from the sandblast) is how Jens has elongated the transition. It separates the bowl from the rest of the piece, giving it a "perched" demeanor, as well as offering the perfect thumb rest. With a dark stain, that's just a touch away from true black, the stummel contrasts against the jet-black stem and pairs beautifully with the broad silver band. Incredibly well crafted and gorgeously designed, this is yet another piece that shows off Tao's skill and craftsmanship.
