Danish Estates: Stanwell Hypnotic Smooth (pre-2010) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-001-34264
During World War II, while Europe was embroiled in turmoil, briar scarcity and limited international shipping meant that Danish pipe smokers couldn't obtain pipes from England. To fill this void, Poul Nielsen began making pipes out of beechwood under the name Kyringe. After the war, Nielsen transitioned to making briar pipes, and eventually changed his brand's name to Stanwell. Stanwell became an immensely popular marque that often collaborated with notable Danish artisans, like Sixten Ivarsson, Jess Chonowitsch, Anne Julie, and Tom Eltang. This Billiard is a classic interpretation of the timeless shape, with a broad bowl that cants forward out of a wide transition. The shank ebbing out of this transition is quite short, meeting a strikingly vibrant band of swirling cobalt acrylic which marks the junction to a mouthpiece of jet-black acrylic. Dressed in a warm auburn stain that showcases handsome grain, this piece is part of the Hypnotic series from the Danish marque, the little-seen line pairing Stanwell's pipes to unique and alluring accent bands.
