Danish Estates: Jess Chonowitsch Smooth Bent Dublin Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-001-35247
Jess Chonowitsch is a second-generation pipe maker and bears the distinction of being one of Sixten Ivarsson's four direct pupils, learning his craft alongside legendary carvers Jørn Micke, Bo Nordh, and, of course, Sixten's son Lars. Jess is one of the most influential pipe artisans in the world, his distinctly Danish style resulting in pipes with ample curves and plenty of softly-rendered detail to appreciate. This bent Dublin is an impressively compact piece from the artisan, coming in at less than five inches long, though embodying a charming plumpness throughout its build. There's a fluid sense of curvature about the lines of this pipe, with smooth contours defining every aspect of its silhouette, and especially at the shank and stem combination. This pairing flows out of a rather wide transition, as the shank's reserved reach lifts slightly and tapers subtly to meet a demurely curved stem of black vulcanite. Said stem tapers more swiftly than the stem, which draws the eye back from the bowl and toward the junction, though still leaves plenty of visual weight at the fore to ensure every bit of this pipe is appreciated thoroughly. Additionally, this enhanced taper alters the profile fairly significantly, as the more agile look of the stem's bit grants the lines of this pipe a poised and streamlined appearance that stylistically contrasts with some of its plumpness.
Up front, the bowl stands on a sweeping heel, one that organically continues the lines of the shank with graceful ease and naturally gives way to the fore wall. The walls take on an expressive flare out to the rim, with a blooming, almost floral flourish capped by the rim's own broad, domed structure, and these thick walls aptly insulate a capacious chamber, ensuring leisurely, comfortable smoking. Dressed in a warm, rich stain and smooth finish, the stummel displays an array of dense flame grain around its surfaces, while the rim is laden with a vast sea of clustered birdseye speckles. A beautiful pipe from a renowned artisan, this piece is sure to be a treasured member of any collection, especially those with a focus on Danish pipes.
