Danish Estates: Poul Ilsted Smooth Bent Brandy Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-001-35068

Danish artisan Poul Ilsted began his pipe-making career as an apprentice to Erik Nørding, founding the marque Svendborg with Jens Tao Nielsen, and working for famous Copenhagen tobacconist W.Ø. Larsen. Eventually, Ilsted became self-employed, where he cemented his legacy as one of the finest pipe-makers to ever live. Ilsted is most famous for his Bulldogs, his sublime line work and faceting skills fully displayed by the shape. Although he crafted many other shapes, he adhered closely to traditional tenets, but he did often incorporate exotic accents and colorful stems. During his lifetime, Ilsted also mentored many remarkable pipe makers, such as Alexander Tupitsyn and Manduela Ruger-Kusk, who continue to progress his style after he sadly passed away in 2017, leaving behind an incomparable legacy.

Though the bent Brandy was not a rare shape for Poul Ilsted to carve, it was more seldom than not to see the "Master of Facets" craft a pipe devoid of crisp lines. However, this piece is a fine example of Poul Ilsted's exceptional skill at fashioning supple pieces as well. Foremost, the bowl's plump waistline frames the sleek, arcing taper of the walls to the crisp rim, which features a subtle chamfer. Furthermore, the bowl's underside is broad and gently curved, which provides a comfortable in-hand feel and makes the transition to the shank seamless. The ovoid shank accelerates the curvature of the piece, rising with a subdued taper to a broad stem base that gives way to a well-bent saddle and trim bit. Additionally, the stummel is dressed in a natural finish that highlights a varied grain pattern, as straight grain and strikingly visible growth rings abound on the walls, while thick freckles of birdseye swirl on the underside.
