Danish Estates: Poul Ilsted Smooth Bent Dublin with Mammoth (B4) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-001-30604

The late Poul Ilsted's more than three decade-long career was truly a formative one, not just for himself, but for the bevy of artisans that were taught by him, with these including Joao Reis, Manduela, and Alexander Tupitsyn, all of whom benefited from his wealth of knowledge. Ilsted got his start with Erik Nørding, a man who sold him his first blocks of briar and gave him his first encouragement, staying with the prolific Danish carver for two years before leaving with another employee, Jens "Tao" Nielsen, to form the Svendborg pipe factory. Ilsted soon split with this as well, deciding to focus solely on pipes of his own make, free from shape chart restrictions, and doing so earned him a reputation for excellent design and expertly executed lines.

Compared to many of Ilsted's other works, this bent Dublin is a striking deviation, with far more emphasis placed on its height and curvature than on any ostensibly firm lines. As a bent Dublin, this piece showcases a unique reinterpretation of the form, with its tight transition leading into an almost straight shank that takes on a sharp upward turn near the middle. At this point, the shank meets a sleek saddle stem of black vulcanite, its base accented with a pale band of mammoth and its bit taking on a smart arc that makes smoking easy. The posture here is comfortable and primed for jaw-hanging or clenching, and its impressive degree of verticality does well to balance the visual weight of the bowl. Said bowl stands atop a broad heel that's slightly flattened, and this supports thickly flaring walls which expand out toward a domed rim that slopes into the chamber, the ample curves of these walls offering a comfortable feel in hand. This is truly a singular silhouette here that stands out not only among Ilsted's work, but among most other Danish pipes, and it's sure to become a centerpiece in any collection to which it's added. Dressed in a warm mahogany stain, the stummel here showcases some lovely grain, with flame surrounding the bowl and birdseye peppering the rim and underside.
