Danish Estates: Tom Eltang Smooth Acorn with Horn (Snail) (2016) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-001-35410
Danish artisan Tom Eltang brings over 40 years of experience to the world of pipe making, a passion that began at just 6 years old when he first spotted a pipe magazine through the window of a tobacco shop. Renowned as one of the most prolific Danish artisans, Eltang has earned an esteemed reputation, with his name frequently cited by young pipe makers as a key influence in the craft. This Acorn has been awarded Eltang's Snail grade, distinguishing it as some of his best work. This grade is only awarded to pieces that feature particularly noteworthy grain and spectacular shaping, both of which are seen here in this Acorn. At the fore, a forward-canting bowl starts this piece's soft undercurve and features supple walls and a domed rim that makes it almost spherical in profile. A tight transition accentuates the bowl and gives way to an arching oval shank that counterbalances the downturned posture of the saddle stem out back. Dressed in a rich contrast stain, the stummel reveals stunning, tight tendrils of flame grain and handsome whorls of birdseye along the rim, with a band of horn along the junction further accentuating the finish and contributing even more depth to the color palette.
