Danish Estates: Tom Eltang Sandblast Stacked Cutty with Horn (Saturn) Tobacco Pipe

At only 11 years old, with a Pipe Dan kit in hand, Tom Eltang made the first of what would later become many pipes in his prolific career. After seeing some of his work, Anne Julie would take Eltang on as an apprentice when he was 16, where he would further refine his craft for three years. Eltang then took a series of jobs, including pipe repair work for Pipe Dan and designing pipes for Stanwell. When he finally decided to make pipes independently in 1980, Tom Eltang's wealth of experience would culminate into his distinctive style, defined by a precise hand and a discerning eye for detail.

Boasting a towering, Stack-like bowl, this Cutty by Tom Eltang is a more vertically-inclined interpretation of the classic form. Standing with an upright posture, the bowl is formed by supple walls reaching high from the sweeping heel and subtly flaring toward a slim waistline and then gently tapering to the rim, creating a figure that slips into the hand comfortably. Housed within the bowl is an exceptionally deep chamber, making this piece well-suited for leisurely smoking sessions. A compact shank subtly lifts from the transition with a sinuous curve, meeting a flaring mount fashioned from genuine horn that accepts a gingerly downturned tapered stem with a trim expansion ring at its base. Dressing the stummel is a crisp, inky sandblast that reveals textured cross grain on both flanks.
