Danish Estates: Stanwell Sandblasted Billiard (DM) (2003) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-001-35885

Made for the 2003 Danish Pipe Smoking Championship, this saddle-stemmed Billiard from Stanwell is a charming take on the timeless form. The upright bowl contains a respectably deep chamber within its walls, offering a subtle bit of curvature as it curves understatedly from heel to rim. The prominence of the bowl is enhanced thanks to the low-set transition and sleek combination of shank and saddle stem, here rendered in an ovoid configuration. The light-depth sandblast maintains the shape's clean lines while coaxing out a handsome array of undulating grain around the bowl.

During World War 2, while Europe was embroiled in turmoil, briar scarcity and limited international shipping meant that Danish pipe smokers couldn't obtain pipes from England. To fill this void, Poul Nielsen began making pipes out of beechwood under the name Kyringe. After the war, Nielsen transitioned to making briar pipes, and eventually changed his brand's name to Stanwell. Stanwell became an immensely popular marque that often collaborated with notable Danish artisans, like Sixten Ivarsson, Jess Chonowitsch, Anne Julie, and Tom Eltang.
