Danish Estates: Stanwell Smooth Canadian (113) (DM) (2011) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-001-35944

Stanwell's Jess Chonowitsch-designed "113" Canadian shape is a quintessentially Danish form, characterized by the juxtaposition of a more full-bodied, Brandy-esque bowl with a flattened, oval shank. The oval shank does well to accentuate the bowl's taper and makes for a sleek profile all around, nicely showcasing the profile's iconic look. It's dressed here in a warm, grain-defining auburn stain that works well with the black stem to keep things looking classic.

During World War 2, while Europe was embroiled in turmoil, briar scarcity and limited international shipping meant that Danish pipe smokers couldn't obtain pipes from England. To fill this void, Poul Nielsen began making pipes out of beechwood under the name Kyringe. After the war, Nielsen transitioned to making briar pipes, and eventually changed his brand's name to Stanwell. Stanwell became an immensely popular marque that often collaborated with notable Danish artisans, like Sixten Ivarsson, Jess Chonowitsch, Anne Julie, and Tom Eltang.
