Danish Estates: Stanwell Golden Danish Pot (DM) (2006) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-001-36012
Pipes from Stanwell stamped with the "DM" designation are unique pieces specifically made to be used during the Danish Pipe Smoking Championships, each stamped with the year the design was smoked for the competition. This Pot is from the 2006 contest, and it boasts a reserved, balanced build that makes it perfect for everyday carry. The bowl here is the visual center of the pipe, boasting ample substance thanks to its thick, stout walls that rise from a firm heel. A wide transition out back pairs the bowl to a sleek, tapering shank that reaches out to meet a slender saddle stem of black acrylic, the junction marked with a brassy band that handsomely contrasts the stummel's warm sandblast.
During World War 2, while Europe was embroiled in turmoil, briar scarcity and limited international shipping meant that Danish pipe smokers couldn't obtain pipes from England. To fill this void, Poul Nielsen began making pipes out of beechwood under the name Kyringe. After the war, Nielsen transitioned to making briar pipes, and eventually changed his brand's name to Stanwell. Stanwell became an immensely popular marque that often collaborated with notable Danish artisans, like Sixten Ivarsson, Jess Chonowitsch, Anne Julie, and Tom Eltang.
