Danish Estates: Stanwell Hypnotic Smooth Brandy (pre-2010) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-001-36167
During World War 2, while Europe was embroiled in turmoil, briar scarcity and limited international shipping meant that Danish pipe smokers couldn't obtain pipes from England. To fill this void, Poul Nielsen began making pipes out of beechwood under the name Kyringe. After the war, Nielsen transitioned to making briar pipes, and eventually changed his brand's name to Stanwell. Stanwell became an immensely popular marque that often collaborated with notable Danish artisans like Sixten Ivarsson, Jess Chonowitsch, Anne Julie, and Tom Eltang. This Brandy is a handsome showcase of Stanwell's style. As a shape, this piece features a broad, full-bodied bowl that stands at the fore of a trim shank and a slender saddle. The bowl tapers from its wide heel to its taut rim, and as it does, it takes on a low-set waistline that conforms naturally to the hand. The gracile shank-and-stem arrangement supports the bowl and lends an elegant sleekness to the pipe's profile. Dressing this piece is an auburn smooth finish that highlights striking grain across the bowl's flanks.
