Danish Estates: Suhr's Pipe Shop Smooth Cutty Tobacco Pipe

Suhr's Pibemageri was founded in the 1940s by Teophil Suhr and employed a number of famed pipe makers throughout its existence, including Sixten Ivarsson, Poul Rasmussen, and Anne Julie. This Cutty is an older piece, one that, while we can't pinpoint the age of production, we can confirm was made by either Poul Rasmussen or Anne Julie, and it boasts a dignified air of vintage charm about its entire build. Light and graceful, this pipe showcases a svelte stretch of shank and stem that flows out of a wide transition, with the combination taking on a slight bit of taper throughout, as briar gives way to a demurely downturned stretch of black vulcanite. This fluid pairing affords the pipe an agile stance, and one that exudes an understated bit of elegance while nicely balancing the presence of the bowl. Said bowl stands atop a rounded, slightly pronounced heel that arcs into the fore wall as it cants forward dynamically out of the transition. The bowl itself displays ample curvature across its walls, presenting with an egg-like shape that nicely fills out the contours of the hand and rises to more than two inches tall, rising to surround a capacious chamber. A piece of distinctly Danish style, this pipe's outline is rife with clean lines and an easy momentum that gently guides the eye toward the bowl, affording the composition a streamlined and gracile posture. Dressed in a warm, smooth finish, the stummel features a rich, mahogany-toned stain that reveals ample cross grain across the flanks of the bowl. A fine representative of one of artisan pipe carving's most storied workshops, this Cutty's fine workmanship and impressive provenance should make it a standout piece in any collection of historic Danish pipes.
