Danish Estates: Stanwell Royal Rouge (19) (1970s-1990s) Tobacco Pipe

Stanwell's origins began in 1942 when Poul Nielsen founded the Kyringe brand, fashioning beechwood pipes during World War II when briar was in short supply. When the war ended and briar resumed availability, he transitioned to making briar pipes, but struggled to compete against popular English brands that dominated the preferences of the day's pipe smokers. In 1948, Nielsen changed the company's name to Stanwell — a more English-sounding name to cater to popular pipe smoking inclinations — and even changed his own surname to Stanwell. The brand became the first main exporter of Danish pipes, introducing a distinctive style and diversifying the world of pipe design. In the decades after its founding, Stanwell fostered relationships with individual Danish artisans — like Sixten Ivarsson, Jess Chonowitsch, Anne Julie, Tom Eltang, S. Bang, and others — to design shapes for the factory. These artisan-designed shapes were featured alongside Stanwell's standard shape chart, offering the individuality and aesthetic appeal of artisan pipes but with the greater production ability of a state-of-the-art factory. Such a combination is rarely seen from large-scale pipe makers, setting Stanwell apart and lending it a distinguished place among the globe-spanning breadth of pipe making. Up until 2010, all Stanwell pipes were crafted at the company's factory in Borup, Denmark, but since the brand's acquisition by Scandinavian Tobacco Group, production has moved to Italy. As such, pre-2010 Stanwell pipes are considered quite collectible and sought after on the estate market.
