Danish Estates: Bjarne Sandblasted Bulldog Tobacco Pipe

Bjarne Nielsen turned away from a lucrative career in foreign affairs to create pipes in the 1970s, and pipe smokers everywhere are better off for it. Bjarne skewed more traditional than other Danish carvers of his era, but still incorporated creative freehand shaping cues into his pipes. This Bulldog by Bjarne is a particularly bowl-centric take on the classic form, offering a towering, full-bodied bowl that overshadows a comparatively trim shank-and-stem arrangement. Said bowl stands atop a firm, structural heel and grows thick, insulating walls that rise to a beadline-wrapped waist before tapering inward to the rim. The aforementioned diamond shank lends a touch of angularity to the shape's profile, its geometric lines continuing through the base of the stem before dissipating along the bit. Dressing this piece is a rugged, jet-black sandblast that highlights rippling grain throughout the stummel.
