Danish Estates: Sixten Ivarsson Smooth Bent Dublin (1861) (1961) (Twin-Bore Mouthpiece) Tobacco Pipe

A transformative figure in artisan craftsmanship, the late Sixten Ivarsson continues to shape the world of pipe-making. A pioneering Danish carver, he was the first to shape pipes according to the natural patterns of the briar, creating the "shape first, drill second" method that introduced a variety of shapes into the pipe making world. Over a career spanning nearly 60 years, he left an indelible mark on the craft. His legacy lives on through his son Lars and granddaughter Nana, both of whom have become master carvers in their own right. Dated to 1961, this vintage bent Dublin is a thoroughly Danish interpretation, featuring a soft curvaceousness throughout that we often see in Danish designs. The bowl boasts an Opera-like pinch along its flanks, formed by walls that flare from a lifted heel to a broad, flat rim. Said bowl features a fluid, Zulu-like cant, rising out of a seamless transition that gives way to a round shank fitted with a vulcanite stem, out back. The entire stummel is paneled along the underside, informed by two crisp ridgelines along both sides of the shank. The shank is topped with a demurely bent Twin-bore mouthpiece. Sixten oriented the stummel to showcase a wealth of beautiful grain, with a long array of birdseye along the left flank and cross-grain throughout.
