Danish Estates: Manduela Smooth Bulldog with Bone (2014) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-001-38690

Born in Germany in 1967, Manduela Riger-Kusk has lived in Denmark since she was four, and her pipe making style reflects Danish sensibilities readily, especially as those sensibilities inform firm, clean-lined facet work: one of Manduela's most recognizable shaping elements. Manduela's Bulldogs are doubtlessly her most iconic shape, as they most prevalently feature her faceting talent and are often fitted with lively accents, such as this particular example. Compared to her other straight Bulldog renditions, this piece features a taller shank, and one whose flanks are framed with sharp ridges rather than small panels: contributing to a slender look through the aft side despite its slightly enhanced height. The shank itself reaches out from a wide transition and is strikingly lengthy, its diamond shape capped with a short saddle stem of black vulcanite. This Lovat-like combination is punctuated with a band of bone at the stem's base, balancing some of this pipe's visual weight and drawing attention to the aft side. Up front, the bowl stands tall, resting atop a sharp heel defined by the lower ridge of the shank. The bowl's walls make an expressive, yet measured flare out from the heel, the ridges at the shank's flanks rising at the transition and curling up and around these walls before descending to meet the heel. This arrangement of lines sharpens the bowl's look further and adds a great deal of geometric appeal to the composition. Just above this point, a pair of beadlines denote the shape's iconic taper to the rim, emphasizing the bowl's height nicely. Dressed in a warm, rich stain, the stummel is lined with flame grain through the flanks, with a dense pattern of flame surrounding the bowl and a dappled field of birdseye across the rim.
