Danish Estates: Benni Jorgensen Sandblasted Squat Tomato Tobacco Pipe

This squat Tomato is perhaps one of the most formal renditions of the shape by Jorgensen; however, as it is in automotive design, so it is in pipe design that things are seldom totally one direction or the other. Though far more subtle than the sweep and lift seen in some other Benni briars, there is a sense of motion tucked into this broad, rounded design — forward motion. The trailing taper of the saddle bit, the low-profile approach of its step and base, the shallower curve and more aggressive angle of the rear face of the bowl versus its forward face all contribute to this. Not to mention the very, very slight cant of the rim which, combined with the curve and angle of the heel: makes for a profile that looks formal and poised — but ready at any second to go, its textural auburn sandblast revealing ring grain which rises from the heel to the rim, adding tactile and visual intrigue while enhancing its sense of momentum.
