Product Number: 004-002-18035
Made in 2003, Dunhill's Thames Oak line is a limited edition series of only 500 serialized pipes. The series celebrates the history of London, incorporating 2000 year-old oak into the accent band and included tamper. The city of London originally began as the Roman port city of Londinium centralized on the Thames river in the 2nd century BC. In the 1st century AD, then, the city was burned to the ground during Boudicca's Revolt, only to be rebuilt in the subsequent years — the docks rebuilt using the same 200 year-old oak as before. The docks, like the rest of Roman London, however, eventually fell to ruin in the 5th century, with many artifacts and signs of the early Roman city still left underneath today's modern London.
The specific oak wood used in Dunhill's Thames Oak line was discovered during excavations just north of London Bridge by the Museum of London's Archaeological Service and has been dated to have grown during the time before Boudicca's Revolt, the silt and gravel from the Thames having sealed and preserved the timber. Dunhill showcases that ancient wood and symbol of Roman London in a unique accent band comprised of titanium, with strips of wood integrated at the flanks and secured with 14K gold pins. The included tamper also features the oak wood, fitted to a titanium foot to match the pipe. It's a piece that celebrates London's rich history — long before Dunhill was ever fashioning pipes — making for quite the collectible offering. And it's here in unsmoked condition.-Truett Smith
