English Estates: Dunhill Shell Briar (FET) (c.1950s) (Aftermarket Repair Band)
Product Number: 004-002-18332
Before utilizing number stamps to denote shapes, Dunhill relied on letters. For the Prince design, "FE" and "FET" denoted bent and straight versions, respectively. As you can see, this particular piece is one of the latter. A naturally regal and well-poised shape, the Prince is lent a touch more austere formality in its straight iteration, the sleekness prompted by the shank and stem accentuating the bowl's plumpness. While rounded and comfortable in hand, the bowl houses a chamber of about Group 1 or 2 dimensions, and the squat, full-bodied form takes well to the Shell Briar blast, promoting an intriguing texture in hand. Condition-wise, it should be noted that the silver band is an aftermarket repair and at some point the tenon was modified by sanding it down on a lathe.- Jeffery Sitts
