English Estates: GBD Unique Natural Chimney with Threaded Bowl (1960s-1980)
Product Number: 004-002-19206
Although GBD is primarily known for their renditions of classic English shapes, the marque did produce plenty of striking Freehands designs as part of the Unique series that was originally introduced in the 1960s. The line primarily consisted of handmade Freehands that dramatically departed from their standard pipe chart and presented some truly stunning, one-of-a kind pipe designs. This Chimney offering is the perfect addition to the series and is a design that equally focuses on grain orientation and intricate shaping cues. The tall, deep-chambered bowl displays a hint of forward cant and actually unthreads from its base, showcasing the line's playfully daring side. The bowl sits perched on the base with its surrounding ridgelines resembling the "claw holding egg" motif that's commonly seen among meerschaum pipes. The grain is quite remarkable here as well, the bowl and its base covered in tight, vertical streaks of grain. If you're a fan of eccentric pipe designs or are a GBD collector, this isn't one to miss out on.- Jeffery Sitts
