English Estates: Dunhill Shell Briar (4112) (2004)

Product Number: 004-002-18428

This variation of the "12" Stack design is a descendant of one of Dunhill's very earliest types of pipe: the "Windshield" design. There was a straight Bulldog-based version as well as a Stack-based version featured in advertisements, though Dunhill also mentioned being able to make Windshield pipes in other designs upon demand. The Bulldog appears to have actually had a rim that extended beyond usual height up front, whereas the Stack-based one was a Windshield Billiard made by cutting down the rear rim of a Stack shape. The whole idea was for a pipe better suited to "the cyclist, the sportsman, the yachtsman, the automobilist, the billiard player." The latter-most was presumably because the shield would help keep ash or embers off the felt of a billiard table, while "automobilist" is easily explained by the fact that most automobiles of the time were open-top.
