English Estates: Barling's Make Smooth Billiard with Silver and Albatross (c.1900)
Product Number: 004-002-18644
Here's an unprecedented piece of history for us at Smokingpipes: a Barling's Make Billiard with Albatross bone. The mouthpiece is original, but has no crossed "Barling" logo, because that logo wasn't used until the 1920s. Barling made pipes with Albatross beginning around 1880, and while the sterling silver has no hallmark, we believe this piece to be from around 1900. The mouthpiece fits loosely, so I wouldn't recommend this piece as a "clencher," and its seeming delicacy would probably preclude that anyway, though it's a sturdy little pipe with a classic Billiard bowl. Cross-grain orientation places birdseye fore and aft, with horizontal grain on the flanks, all in a traditional stain. I can't imagine how cool it would be to smoke a pipe made 100-140 years ago, but this piece is just as cool purely for display. It's saturated with history, and made by one of the most respected pipe makers of the era.- Chuck Stanion
