English Estates: Dunhill Shell Briar (4108) (2014) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-002-18773
Dunhill's "08" form can be either a bent Bulldog or Rhodesian depending on the shaping of the shank. This particular Group 4 offering comes in Rhodesian configuration, the shank being rounded instead of paneled, but still featuring the Bulldog's characteristic bowl. Continuing the softened motif, the bowl features a subtle ridgeline just below the tapered rim in place of beadlines. Muscular in hand yet quite genteel of line, it's an elegant composition, made more rugged by the Shell Briar sandblast and is offered here in unsmoked condition.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
