English Estates: Dunhill Cumberland Quaint Rhodesian (4) (2011)

Product Number: 004-002-20397

Dunhill's line of Quaint pipes is reserved for shapes that don't fit into the English marque's traditional chart, such as this lithely bent Rhodesian. A subtle ridgeline wraps around the bowl's midsection, accentuating the rim's gentle taper before tapering further towards the heel. The stem tapers gradually toward the button and displays a slight downturn, offering excellent balance for clenching. This composition is rendered in Group 4 proportions and is finished in the textured sandblast of the Cumberland series with the smooth rim offering a hint of contrast.

When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."
