English Estates: Dunhill Tanshell (6LBS) (4) (T) (1965)
Product Number: 004-002-20564
Dunhill's "LBS" is essentially a big, bold classic English Billiard, "LBS" being, in fact, the shape number itself. When paired with a saddle stem, the "LBS" like its cousin the "LB," is stamped with a "6" beside the shape code. This Group 4-sized piece from 1965 features a proportionally balanced shank-and-stem combination that pairs well with the tall, poised bowl. This one's finished in the marque's Tanshell sandblast and has nicely darkened over the years, drawing focus to the undulating grain that cascades down the right flank.
Created in 1951, the Tanshell marked Dunhill's fourth finish behind the Bruyere (1910), Shell Briar (1917), and Root Briar (1931); however, Dunhill didn't complete the "Tanshell" stamp until December 1951, waiting until 1952 to actually introduce the first Tanshell pipes. Considered one of the English marque's rarest, most collectible finishes, the Tanshell boasts a concise sandblast but unlike the dark-stained Shell Briar, the Tanshell is naturally stained, intended to develop a warm patina as it darkens with prolonged use over time.- Andrew Wike
