English Estates: Ashton Pebble Grain Canadian (XXX) (2008)
Product Number: 004-002-29131
This substantial Canadian from Ashton is dressed in the English workshop's deeply tactile Pebble Grain finish and wears a dark, ruby-tinged stain to accentuate the rustic aesthetic of the sandblast. An upright bowl stands nearly two inches tall, perched at the end of the elongated oval stem that makes the classic English shape easily recognizable. The shank tapers very slightly as it stretches toward an abbreviated and tapered vulcanite stem. Like all of Ashton's pipes, the stem is carefully crafted by hand, this one featuring a slight fishtail to broaden the surface. Fashioned in XXX size, this piece occupies the center range of the maker's offered dimensions, which, due to Ashton's fondness for robust proportions, makes it comparable in size to a Dunhill Group 5. Made in the final year before William Ashton-Taylor's untimely passing, a period in which he passed the reigns of the Ashton tradition to Jimmy Craig, this offering represents an excellent opportunity to acquire an excellent smoker from the iconic workshop.-Joel Balyeat
