English Estates: Dunhill Shell (6103) (RG) (1994)
Product Number: 004-002-29161
Simultaneously one of Dunhill's simplest and most devoutly classical designs, the "03" Billiard appears in every Group size and all manner of configurations. This Group 6 offering from 1994 goes back to basics, presenting itself simply as a finely-executed traditional English Billiard dressed in the marque's Shell Briar sandblast and topped off with a tapered mouthpiece. This is the kind of pipe that would be the perfect choice for fans of robustly proportioned shape-chart standards or anyone who appreciates excellent sandblasts, with this piece having earned Dunhill's esteemed "Ring Grain" stamp.
Having earned the English marque's prestigious Ring Grain designation, this Dunhill piece wears a particularly choice iteration of the Shell Briar sandblast — displaying stunning waves of ring grain across the stummel. The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.- Jeffery Sitts
