English Estates: Dunhill Shell (513) (1976)
Product Number: 004-002-29284
This vintage straight "03" Billiard from Dunhill hearkens back to the storied English marque's 1970s era. And it represents that period well, using Group 5 dimensions and a dark ruby stain to proudly display the deep sandblast of the Shell Briar finish. Paired with a tapered vulcanite stem, this ultra-classic offering represents an excellent chance to add a piece of English pipe history to any collection.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.- Joel Balyeat
