English Estates: Charatan's Make Special Liverpool (20104) (c.1980)
Product Number: 004-002-29477
An aspect that separated Charatan from other classic English pipe makers from the early- to mid-1900s was its proclivity to creatively reinterpret traditional shapes more so than the workshop's contemporaries. This Liverpool, then, is something of an outlier within Charatan's portfolio, beautifully representing an archetypal example of the timeless shape, with its elongated, round shank, abbreviated tapered stem, and standard Billiard bowl. It's a rare design from the English maker, appealing to collectors of classic shapes who otherwise might pass on Charatan's typically more avant-garde shaping style.-Truett Smith
