English Estates: Dunhill Bruyere (0511) (1977) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-31734
Dunhill is known for their well-balanced proportions, classic, refined shaping, and iconic finishes, all of which are on display with this straight Apple. While this piece bears a "0511" stamp, given its plump proportions and rotund bowl, that is most likely a factory error, as the English marque's typical shape chart identifies a straight Apple with an "01" stamp. The "5" here is probably the pipe's Group size, which is evident when considering the stoutness of the bowl and shank. It's presented in the ruby hues of the Bruyere smooth finish, highlighting the natural grain orientation of the briar rather brilliantly.
The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.
