English Estates: Dunhill Bruyere (4103) (2017)
Product Number: 004-002-29607
Dunhill is known for their exquisite craftsmanship and refined, traditional style, but this Billiard showcases a more playful variation on a classic shape. While the bowl retains its familiar cylindrical disposition, sitting at a slight forward cant, the stem and shank are hexagonal shaped, vaguely reminiscent of a Bulldog's diamond shank. The sharp angularity of the shank-stem combination adds a rigid flair that offsets the forward momentum of bowl while also contrasting with its roundness. The black vulcanite stem perfectly balances the shank in both shape and proportionality, tapering to a fine point. In the Bruyere finish, the grain pops boldly across the stummel, leaving a feast for the eye as it traces the unique design.
The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.--Davin Hylton
