English Estates: Dunhill Root Briar Collector Bent Billiard (HT) (1988)
Product Number: 004-002-29614
Dunhill's collector series denotes a few different things, namely an exemplary display of grain pattern and shaping that deviates from their standard chart. This bent Billiard, as a part of the aforementioned series, features a saddle stem and a slim, high-kicking shank that dips to a fluid, round heel. A much more sinuous pipe than the standard, "02" shape, this piece possesses a bulbous bowl with a gentle taper, looking to be a fusion of Billiard and Brandy, with a smattering of Apple as well. As previously mentioned, Collector series pipes include superlative grain structure, something on display readily by this pipe. Dressed in the Root Briar finish, flame grain licks around the perimeter of the bowl, displaying growth rings on occasion, and revealing a brilliant birdseye pattern on the upturned heel.
The highest honor for a Dunhill pipe is to receive the prestigious Root Briar appellation. Root Briars have been coveted by pipe smokers ever since they first debuted in 1931, due to the fact that each pipe must boast briar completely free of even the most minor of blemishes. Dunhill has the strictest of standards and expectations for quality with all of their pipes, and so any block of briar that comes to bear the Root Briar stamp must indeed be superlative.-John McElheny
