English Estates: Dunhill Shell Briar with Silver Army Mount (5103) (1997)
Product Number: 004-002-30026
In sturdy Group 5 proportions, this "03" straight Billiard from Dunhill strikes a sleek, streamlined profile, with the tall, statuesque bowl balanced in profile by a rounded shank that extends from the low-slung transition. This piece wears the Shell Briar sandblasted finish, lightly texturing the stummel and accentuating some lively birdseye across one flank. The sterling silver military mount adds a dose of flash to the pipe's rather shadowy profile while also enabling the pipe to be easily broken down. The push-style, tapered stem of jet-black vulcanite tops off the design, perfectly harmonizing in color with the stummel.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.--Davin Hylton
