English Estates: Dunhill Shell Briar 'Not for Sale' (4589) (252) (F/T) (Weak Stamping)

Product Number: 004-002-29935

Ruggedly dark and handsome, this vintage straight Billiard from Dunhill boasts a Group 4-sized bowl paired to a lithe shank and stem, providing a comfortable compositional balance. This "252" boasts the English marque's iconic Shell Briar sandblast, which introduced sandblasting to the industry. Wearing a dark, refined stain that highlights some fine grain striations, this pipe offers a wonderful textural experience and is a sturdy sitter. What makes this pipe all the more interesting is the stamp, which, though faint, reads "NOT FOR SALE" across the top of the original nomenclature. That stamp was used for pipes given to distribution reps or tobacco shop employees to smoke as advertisement for the brand.

The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
