English Estates: Dunhill Tanshell (253) (4) (T) (1964)

Product Number: 004-002-29793

This vintage Billiard from Dunhill exudes the exquisite refinement that makes the English marque's pipes so endearing. Dated to 1964, the softly rounded bowl sits upright at the front of the pipe, with the trim shank-and-stem combination meeting the transition at the heel, rendering a sleek, streamlined profile that emphasizes the pipe's proportions and slender line work. Dressed in the iconic Tanshell sandblast, the briar's natural grain patterns come to life, highlighting the subtle growth rings hidden underneath the cascading striations of vertical grain that travel up the bowl. Stimulating and lively, this piece possesses the subtle grace of old-school craftsmanship, awaiting the right collector with keen eye for its endless charm.

Created in 1951, the Tanshell marked Dunhill's fourth finish behind the Bruyere (1910), Shell Briar (1917), and Root Briar (1931); however, Dunhill didn't complete the "Tanshell" stamp until December 1951, waiting until 1952 to actually introduce the first Tanshell pipes. Considered one of the English marque's rarest, most collectible finishes, the Tanshell boasts a concise sandblast but unlike the dark-stained Shell Briar, the Tanshell is naturally stained, intended to develop a warm patina as it darkens with prolonged use over time.
