English Estates: Dunhill Cumberland with Silver (4104) (2020)
Product Number: 004-002-29765
This is a pipe whose stummel is a brilliant display of juxtaposing elements, soft, subtle shaping contrasting firm ridgelines in this "04" Bulldog from Dunhill. The English marque has crafted a special kind of Bulldog here, the Diamond ridgelines flowing into the bowl, creating a stiff heel, contrasted by the softly inflated bowl, coming to an apex with a ridgeline so gentle it's barely there. This pipe is part of the English marque's venerable Cumberland series, though, instead of utilizing the dark brindle stem that is the norm for the finish, this pipe is special, with a much lighter, creamier brindled stem. This stem meets a silver band at the shank end, carved in a light geometric pattern, adding a bit of flash and bright contrast to more subdued color palette.
When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe-smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."-John McElheny
