English Estates: Dunhill Cumberland (5108) (2003)
Product Number: 004-002-29781
Though its shape code is "08", Dunhill's designation for the bent Rhodesian, this is most certainly a bent Bulldog, as the diamond shank and stem can attest. However, this pipe is certainly deserving of its Group 5 size appellation, the profile large but squat, with a thick shank that transitions with a charming cheek, the ridgelines along the flanks curling into the bowl and dissipating almost instantly. The bowl softly inflates to a ridgeline that denotes the taper toward the rim, overlooking a capacious chamber. Wearing Dunhill's iconic Cumberland finish, the stummel's ruby-tinged stain and light sandblast revealing handsome growth rings, the deep arc of the brindled stem complimenting it nicely.
When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe-smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."-John McElheny
