English Estates: Dunhill Shell Briar (4106) (2012)

Product Number: 004-002-30320

A shape chart classic, the "06" Pot shape from Dunhill is a tidy, timeless design that pairs a thick, muscular bowl to an arrow-straight shank-and-stem arrangement. Presented in Group 4 size, this piece houses a decent bit of chamber capacity and possesses well-balanced proportions that keep the overall design handy and easy to grip. The stummel wears the dark, low-profile Shell Briar sandblast that coaxes out some subtle hints of growth rings about the stummel, with the tapered mouthpiece of jet-black vulcanite perfectly complementing the stark hues of the briar. Streamlined, minimalist, and all together charming, this piece will make a welcome addition to any collector's rotation.

The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
