English Estates: Charatan Coronation Dublin Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-30508
For any devout Charatan Collector, reading the name of this pipe alone is enough to get your attention, hold it, and never let it go. Yes, this is a Coronation: the highest grading the English marque ever produced outside of the Achievement family of grades. In the entire history of our site, we've only ever come across six of these pipes including this one, speaking to the rarity of this grade very well. This particular example is a straight Dublin, and one with a very striking shape to it as well, with the shank visually extending through the bottom of the bowl, creating an outcropping of circular briar that dips just a touch toward the floor. There is a very subtle taper possessing the shank proper, something continued by the base of the double comfort stem before it steps down into its distinctive staggered saddle configuration. The bowl itself is quite squat, though it is also stout, flaring gently out of its rounded heel to a rim that is crowned in craggy plateau, the texture contrasting that of the briar beneath it quite well. Dressing this superlative piece is a warm mahogany stain that reveals a rather stunning array of straight and flame grain wrapping the stummel, traveling from either end of the shank and around, while completely enveloping the bowl, showing just why it has been crowned a Coronation.-John McElheny
