English Estates: Barling's Make Smooth Bent Billiard with Silver Wind Cap (Levitus & Co. 52 Haymarket) (1913) Tobacco Pipe

This stunning Billiard from Barling is quite the collector's item. Made over a century ago in 1913, this pipe is remarkably preserved for its age and features the excellent silver work that earned the Barling family a sterling reputation throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. This piece bears the stamp of the Barling company as well the name and address of the shop for which it was made, common in earlier examples from the English marque. Made for and presumably retailed by Levitus & Co. at their storefront at 52 Haymarket Street, perhaps in London, this pipe has been well cared for and shows minimal wear save for some slight dings in its silver wind cap.

The wind cap is the standout feature on this pipe. Ingeniously designed, the domed cap can be rotated to move a small, ventilated portion away from the direction of the wind. The cap can be lifted at its elegantly worked latch and is attached by a small and still fully-functional hinge. The locking mechanism also makes a very satisfying clicking sound when opened and closed. Not to be outdone, however, the thoroughly traditional bowl boasts outstanding flame grain all around, with a line of birdseye running the length of the heel and shank. The transition is further augmented by a broad silver accent band, stamped with the tell-tale S and lion that denote British sterling silver. The stem on this piece is rendered in hand cut black vulcanite, perfectly bent to facilitate comfortable smoking. The rarity and quality of this Barling, as well as its incredible vintage, makes this a pipe fit to be the centerpiece in any collection.
