English Estates: Dunhill Shell (3103) (1988) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-31821
In Group 3 size, Dunhill's "03" straight Billiard is perhaps at its most quintessential, perfectly personifying the classic form and representing the archetype to which many other makers look for inspiration and shaping standards. This particular example was fashioned in 1988 and wears the marque's renowned Shell sandblast, offering rustic texture underneath a dark, traditional stain.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
