English Estates: Comoy's Olympic Sandblasted Freehand (1948) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-32051
This is an exceptionally unique piece from Comoy's not only because it was crafted in 1948, or because it's staggeringly large, but because, from everything we've researched about it, it was carved as part of an extremely limited series of pipes that commemorated the 1948 London Olympics. There is precious little else information-wise about this series that I've been able to uncover, but this pipe really speaks for itself: a massive, over seven inch long Freehand Rhodesian that balances an immense, muscular bowl at the end of a comparatively sleek shank and stem arrangement. This bowl is impossible to miss, and its stature is strikingly impressive, comprising nearly three-inch tall walls that rise out of the heel and flare out to a high-set waist before tapering to the rim. From the heel to the underside of the transitional area flows a band of craggy plateau that pushes out from the expected outline of this pipe and not only extends the thickness of the bowl into the start of the shank but is stable enough to allow the piece to sit stably. From here, the shank takes on an easy taper to the stem base, with the stem's demurely bent saddle orientation doing well to further exemplify the svelte outline of the aft portion of this pipe. The transition here is wide enough to drape a thumb but sees the shank kicking high from out of the bowl, lending both it and the stem a comfortable smoking posture and a nice bit of verticality which counteracts some of the draw the bowl has on the eye. Dressed in a warm tanblast, this piece showcases handsome grain throughout, with rippling growth rings abounding throughout its stummel.-John McElheny
