English Estates: Dunhill Bruyere (51021) (1980) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-32718
Presented in Group 5 size, this "02" bent Billiard from Dunhill boasts some seriously stout proportions, especially around the towering, deep-chambered bowl. Said bowl stands at the fore of an arching shank-and-stem arrangement that sweeps out of the low-set transition and strikes a refined S-curve. Even given its robust size, this piece remains remarkably well-balanced, with the bowl, shank, and stem all harmoniously aligned within the composition. The ruby hues of the Bruyere finish dresses the stummel and highlight impressive swathes of birdseye on either flank of the bowl.
The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.--Davin Hylton
