English Estates: Dunhill Shell Briar (5105) (1998) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-32785
This "05" Dublin from Dunhill is fashioned in Group 5 size, second only to the English marque's Group 6 designation. With the form's characteristic, tapered bowl and firm heel, with just the slightest hint of a forward cant, the bowl is deeply chambered and set to a lengthy shank-and-stem arrangement. Dressed in the dark Shell Briar sandblast, this piece offers both visual and textural appeal.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.--Davin Hylton
