English Estates: Dunhill Shell Briar (3111) (DK) (2019) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-33612
Though occasionally rendered in other Group sizes, I find that Dunhill's "11" Lovat is at it's best in Group 3. The proportions are simply spot on and the overall size is both generous in hand but versatile enough to clench or stow in a pocket. It's the perfect everyday pipe, especially in the Shell Briar finish — the rugged sandblast and dark stain keeps any potential handling marks less noticeable while still maintaining the iconic shape's sleek lines and elegant form.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
