English Estates: Dunhill Shell Briar (137) (F/T) (4) (S) (1969) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-002-39446
This "137" Dublin from Dunhill is quite svelte in its shaping. The bowl showcases trim, elegant proportions and a subtle forward-leaning posture that establishes a bit of energy and momentum within the composition. Joining the bowl by way of a low-set, angular transition is a long, slender shank. Said shank is met with an equally slender, sleek tapered stem made of vulcanite. Adding some ruggedness to the piece is Dunhill's signature Shell Briar finish.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
