English Estates: Ashton Old Church Billiard (XXX) (2000) Tobacco Pipe

Bill Ashton-Taylor got his start making pipes for Dunhill, but after mastering the craft, realized he needed to set out on his own, so he founded the British marque Ashton. Sadly, Bill passed away in 2009, but pipe maker Jimmy Craig proudly carries on the Ashton name. Imprinted with their "XXX" size stamp, this hand-filling Billiard from Ashton remains faithful to the traditional British proportions, as the shank length similar to the slightly-canted bowl's height. The familiar stummel is dressed in Ashton's Old Church sandblast, creating a scaly surface of growth rings that cover the entire pipe, except for atop the shank where one finds bumps of birdseye. Additionally, a colorful cumberland stem delivers a dark contrast to the warm, honey stain that shines brightest on the adjacent shank.
